Firefly is an online hub allowing teachers and students to have access to school information both in and out of the classroom. Designed primarily to streamline teachers’ workloads to give them more time to teach, Firefly helps by bringing together what they need most, from timetables, lesson plans and resources, through to tools to set and mark homework, track student progress, and manage day-to-day workloads. By collecting data on teaching and learning, both at an individual and school-wide level, the hub aid school leaders too.

Firefly also helps students by giving access to resources for independent learning and revision, and also allows for work to be submitted in any format, both on and offline. By “flipping” the classroom, the students become much more independent and in control of their own learning. Parents can also get more involved in their child’s learning through the hub, receiving notifications, forms or requests directly from the school.

How they’re disrupting

Firefly’s main USP is its collaborative learning approach, which enables teachers to develop a one-to-one, personal learning conversation with each of their students. Firefly also empowers students to work in their own way and at their own pace, being able to access their resources whenever and wherever they need them. Despite the huge time pressures on schools and teachers Firefly gets used regularly – in fact, schools where Firefly has been introduced is used by 97% of the teachers.

Disruption potential

The Edtech and smart classrooms market is growing at speed, as it still lags behind its sector peers who are much more ready for technological implementation. However, the market is still expected to be worth $93 billion by 2020.

Investments and future

Firefly secured the biggest series A fundraising ever seen in the UK Edtech sector – £4.5 million from BGF Ventures and Beringea. With offices in London and Sydney, Firefly is set to expand across the Northern and Southern hemispheres.
